Shortcuts for Zhuyin Input

If you are really into Chinese input with Zhuyin, the Microsoft New Phonetic IME 2003 (10 MB) adds the ability to create customized user phrases. These phrases are essentially any combination of Chinese characters. A phrase could be your Chinese name or a common grammar pattern. What's great about using customized user phrases is that each phrase has a shortcut code associated with it. Instead of typing the phrase just type the ` (grave accent) key and then the shortcut code.

To create User Phrase
On the Language Bar, click the Tools button and then click Properties.

Click the Dictionary tab. Under User Phrase, select the check box beside Enable user phrase. Next, click User phrase editor ... to open the phrase editor.

On the Edit menu, click Add Phrase.

In this example type 謝謝你, and then type ENTER. Notice in the furthest right column, a short-cut code of XXN, is automatically created. Shortcut codes can be 2 to 4 English letters in length.

Finally, on the File menu, click Save.

Using a User Phrase

Open your favorite text editor, type the ` (grave accent) key. The ` key is located on the upper left corner of most keyboards. Next type xxn, the code of our 謝謝你 user phrase, and then type Enter. The IME should have automatically inserted our custom phrase.

Punctuation Shortcuts

The IME also includes shortcuts for full-width punctuation characters. For example, Type ` (grave accent) key and then type any punctuation. The following are some of the more common punctuation.

. = 。
, = ,
? = ?
; = ;
' = 、
! =!
